What is a heatmap?

Short answer

A heatmap is a map of your page in colours. You see where visitors click and how far they scroll.

Red is where a lot happens. Blue is where little happens. That way you see at a glance what visitors really do.

People are often shocked. The important button is so low that almost nobody sees it. Or visitors click on something that is not a link.

Free tools such as Microsoft Clarity create heatmaps and recordings of visits. You do not see names. It does have to be in your cookie banner.

Real-life example

An accountant saw in the heatmap that almost nobody got past the middle of his homepage. He moved his contact button higher. More enquiries came in.
