What is a redirect?
A redirect automatically sends visitors and Google from an old address to a new address.
Do you change the address of a page? Then the old link no longer works. With a redirect everyone still ends up in the right place.
A 301 redirect is permanent. Google then passes the value of the old page on to the new one. A 302 is temporary and you only use it if the old page is coming back.
Redirects are very important for a new website. Without redirects you often lose a large part of your visitors from Google.
Real-life example
A builder gets a new website. All old addresses redirect with a 301 to the new pages. His rankings in Google stay the same.
