What is a backlink?

Short answer

A backlink is a link from another website to your website. For Google it is a kind of recommendation.

The more good sites link to you, the more Google trusts you. A link from a local newspaper counts for more than ten links from unknown sites.

You often get good backlinks naturally. Through your suppliers, a club you sponsor or a local news item. Do not buy packages with hundreds of links. Google notices and penalises it.

Real-life example

A gardener sponsors the football club in his village. The club puts his logo with a link on its website. That is a strong local backlink.
