What is a long-tail keyword?

Short answer

A long-tail keyword is a longer and more specific search term. Fewer people search for it. But whoever types it often knows exactly what they want.

"Heat pump" is a short and popular keyword. "Hybrid heat pump installation manchester" is a long-tail keyword. Fewer people search for it. But they do want to buy something.

It is much easier to reach the top for long-tail keywords. That is why they are often the fastest route to customers for small businesses.

Real-life example

An estate agent writes a page about "selling a house in south manchester". Little competition and exactly the right visitors.
