What is a sitemap?

Short answer

A sitemap is a list of all the pages on your website. It is made for Google so it does not miss a page.

Google finds pages by following links. But a new page without links is sometimes not found. A sitemap solves that.

You submit the sitemap to Google Search Console once. After that Google checks it regularly by itself. On a good website the sitemap updates automatically.

Real-life example

An accountant puts five new pages online. Thanks to the sitemap they are in Google within a few days.
