What is an alt text?
An alt text is a short description of an image. Google and AI read this text because they cannot see the photo itself very well.
People with poor eyesight have their website read aloud. The screen reader then reads out the alt text. Without alt text they miss the photo.
It is useful for Google too. A good alt text helps you get found in Google Images. Describe what is really in the photo. Do not fill it with a list of keywords.
Real-life example
Not "IMG_2034.jpg" but "Newly landscaped garden with a wooden deck".
