What is the bounce rate?

Short answer

The bounce rate is the share of your visitors who leave without doing anything. They come in and leave right away.

In GA4 this works a little differently. There you look at engaged sessions. A visit counts as engaged if someone stays longer than ten seconds, clicks or views more pages.

A high bounce rate is not always bad. Does someone look up your phone number and call right away? Then that is actually good.

Do many people leave an important page? Then check if the page loads fast and if what the visitor wants is at the top.

Real-life example

An estate agent had a high bounce rate on his property page. The photos loaded slowly on phones. After making the photos smaller visitors stayed longer.
